I love looking at scrapbook pages!! Perusing the galleries, finding inspiration, looking on Pinterest – these are all some of my favorite pastimes.
BUT – when I want to create my own layout, how on earth do I put it together??
Scrapbooking has changed so much since I began back in 2004. Then, there were scrapbook magazines – now we have websites, Pinterest, digital scrapbooking!!! So many options!
There are so many places to find amazing digital scrapbook layouts. Just do a search at Pinterest, Scrapbook.com, Designer Digitals, Gallery Standouts Blog. Layout ideas abound.
So, how do I start?
Let’s take a look at 5 big ideas for inspiring you to create your own awesome scrapbook page!
Idea #1:
Let Your Subject Be the Focus!
Pick a photo and let THAT PHOTO be the focus of your layout.
How many scrapbook layouts have you seen where you have NO IDEA what you’re supposed to look at? The photos? The embellishments? The journaling?!
In the above scrapbook page, there is no doubt what the subject is – one photo, one subject and the title pretty much explains it all.
What? You want to use more than one photo? Well … that brings us to …
Idea #2:
Use Your Photos to Tell a Story!
Use your photos to tell the story.
You can even use the same photo and crop it differently for each frame. In the above amazing layout there are three photos. EACH PHOTO reflects the title of the layout and the journaling.
The viewer’s eye can easily travel from one photo to the next and know what they are supposed to see.
Idea #3: Stick with a color theme!
Want to create an amazing scrapbook page? Choose a color theme and use it to reflect the story!
There are hundreds of articles out there about color theory, the color wheel, telling us about how this color is for love, and that one is for peace, and on and on and …
Those articles are there for a reason! Color catches the eye and communicates mood and feelings.
When you plan your layout, choose a color theme and try to stay with it. In the layout above, the colors are black, white and aquamarine. Brushwork and papers have been kept to the color theme and everything works together.
Don’t be afraid to alter your photo – changing it to black and white makes it incredibly versatile! Personally, I love changing photos to black and white. It’s sooo easy in Photoshop CC.
Idea #4 – Try Using a Template!
I don’t know about you, but there are times that I just CAN’T get a layout to work!!! I have all these wonderful elements and photos and papers, but have absolutely no idea how to put them together.
That’s when I try a template!
Digital Scrapbook stores abound with templates and quick pages. All you have to do is drop in your photo, choose some papers and there you go – an amazing scrapbook page!
The layout above uses Layer Works No. 985 from Designer Digitals. I was originally going to use some of the items from the template to create my own, but after working with it a bit, I realized that the template told the exact story I wanted to tell.
How perfect is that!!?
Idea #5 – Try Something Different!
Who says that amazing pages have to have pictures of people or places?
Try using a photo of something that represents a moment or memory. This beautiful photo of cappuccino brings back the memory of my morning breakfast with my honey. I used the title and some word art to capture the details, but the photo says it all.
And there you have 5 big ideas for amazing scrapbook pages! There are many, many more and I would love to hear about them from you!
